Frequently asked questions.

What happens during my first visit?

After you complete your paperwork, you’ll meet with your therapist to discuss your medical history, any problems or complaints, your pain levels, any functional limitations or impact on your daily activities, your goals with therapy, any medications you are taking, and tests or procedures you’ve had that relate to your health.

The therapist will then perform an objective evaluation, which will enable him/her to develop a treatment plan for you. This plan will be created with your input, and with information from your therapist and your doctor.

The plan will also include the number of times per week you should see the therapist, as well as the duration of your therapy. You’ll receive a customized therapeutic home exercise program, patient education information, short-term and long-term goals, and details on what you can expect after you complete your therapy.

What should I wear?

For your appointment, please wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely and that will permit the therapist to easily access the part of the body they will be treating. For example, patients being seen for a knee injury should wear shorts, and those with a shoulder injury should wear a sleeveless shirt.

How long will my appointment take?

Initial evaluation and follow-up therapy treatments typically last 60-75 minutes per visit.

What will I have to do after therapy?

Patients are given therapeutic exercises that emphasize a functional approach based on restoring normal body biomechanics. These exercises are to be done at home, and this important component of the healing process will assist you in achieving your goals.

Some patients will need to continue with home exercises after therapy is over, some may choose to continue with a gym exercise program, and others will complete their rehabilitation and return to normal daily activities. It is important that you communicate your goals to your therapist, so he/she can develop a custom program for you.

How will my therapist communicate my progress?

During your therapy sessions, your therapist will provide you with updates, and will offer similar progress reports and recommendations to your doctor, surgeon, and/or case manager.

How many visits will I need?

You may need one or two visits or you may need months of care. It depends on your diagnosis, the severity of your impairments, your medical history, and other factors. Your therapist will provide you with an assessment after you have been seen.

Can I elect to pay cash for physical therapy, occupational therapy, hand therapy, pediatric speech therapy, or acupuncture services?

Yes. Therapy Specialists offers patients the option to pay for services in cash (military discounts apply). Please speak with our team to learn more about self-pay/cash services.

How far in advance should I schedule appointments?

Same-day appointments can be scheduled, depending on availability. However, it is recommended that you book your appointments 1-2 weeks in advance to ensure availability and consistency of care.

What if I need to change or cancel an appointment?

Please call in advance of your appointment to reschedule. We require 24 hours’ notice for cancellations.

Do you accept workers’ compensation claims?

Yes. Our staff will assist you in determining your insurance coverage and requirements.

Will telehealth work if my child has difficulty sitting in front of a screen?

Yes! Our therapists incorporate a wide range of activities into telehealth sessions that involve movement, outdoor activities, etc. to meet your child’s individual needs. In addition, we are trained in several different approaches that are effective in improving overall engagement, attention, and motivation for children of all ages via our telehealth platform.

Will telehealth work for my child’s age and diagnosis?

Yes! We are seeing tremendous success and progress for children of all ages (from birth- 18 years of age) with all kinds of diagnoses (language delays, articulation/phonological difficulties, stuttering, Apraxia, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down’s Syndrome, ADD, ADHD, genetic syndromes, and more). In some cases, we see even greater progress via telehealth than in person because of the unique opportunity it creates for parent coaching and for your child to be seen in their most natural environment- your home!

What do I need at home to be set up for telehealth?

All you need for our telehealth sessions is a working internet connection and a device with a camera (e.g. computer, laptop, smart phone, Ipad, etc.). We use the ZOOM platform for our teletherapy sessions, and before your first session, you will receive an email with instructions and a link for logging into your therapy sessions. If you’re still having issues, we can walk you through it while on a phone call.
