3 Ways Physical Therapy Can Help You with Chronic Pain

3 Ways Physical Therapy Can Help You with Chronic Pain

Mar 12, 2019 | Uncategorized |

A common question our physical therapists often get is, “Can physical therapy help me with chronic pain?”

Chronic pain can be debilitating. It can affect every aspect of your life from your work, to your relationships, to your activities, to your perspective on life when you wake up in the morning. Today, the reality is that for most patients their first line of defense against chronic pain are opiods (or pain killers). On the contrary, we believe (as you might suspect) that physical therapy should be your first line of defense in the fight against chronic pain.

As you know, there’s an opioid epidemic in this country, with many physicians and patients thinking that strong medication is the only answer for pain management. In the video below, our own Steven Hallan, PT, gives some insight into how physical therapy can help relieve your pain and reduce your dependence on opioids.

Steven Hallan_Can PT help with chronic pain

He outlines three ways in which physical therapists can help patients with chronic pain.

  1. Provide personalized stretches and exercises that will help alleviate chronic pain
  2. Teach you how to avoid the harmful activities that can actually make your pain worse
  3. Introduce you to other more positive activities to help you get better
